T.T. Dorji, IAS Chief Electoral Officer, Sikkim |
India has established itself as the largest democracy in the world, sustained not only by true grit and determination of an independent and impartial statutory Election Commission, but also by a foolproof electoral system. It is this electoral system, which is based on the principal of universal adult suffrage; that any citizen over the age of 18 years can vote, which has been enshrined in the Representation of Peoples Act that has enabled the continuance, survival and stability of the Indian political system. In the Sikkim context, the Electoral rolls have been computerized and are being updated annually to include new names, delete names of those who have died or moved out of the constituency and to correct any spelling mistakes or age discrepancies. The Electors' Photo Identity Cards programme is being undertaken online to ensure total coverage of all the electors, which is being reflected in the revised electoral rolls. In a similar manner all information pertaining to election related matters is being hosted on this website, to ensure total transparency and free flow of information to the general public. |
